Huntingdon earns fourth conference sweep of the season

BREVARD, N.C. – The Huntingdon softball team won a pair of conference games on Sunday to earn its fourth conference sweep of the season.

The Lady Hawks beat Brevard 7-1 in Game 1 and capped the day with a 1-0 win in eight innings.

Madison Hunt and Lauren Melton each pitched complete games for Huntingdon. Hunt (14-3) earned the win in Game 1 with her 12th complete game of the season. Hunt struck out six, walked one and allowed seven hits and one run in seven innings.

Melton (6-3) pitched her fifth complete game of the season and picked up her first shutout. Melton struck out eight, walked two and gave up six hits in eight innings.

In Game 1, Huntingdon put together eight hits and five runs in the first three innings to take control. An RBI single by Hannah Vines made it 1-0 in the second inning before a two-run double by McKenzie Ridgway and a two-run single by Annie Nolan made it 5-0 in the third inning.

Leading 5-1 in the top of the sixth inning, Huntingdon scored its final two runs on errors. Vines scored on the first error of the inning to make it a five-run game. Alyssa Singleterry, after stealing second base and third base, scored the final run on another error.

Nolan was 3-for-4 with two RBIs in the game, Ridgway was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run and Singleterry was 2-for-4 with two runs and three stolen bases. Vines was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run, Caitlyn Caffee was 2-for-4 with a run and Rayne Ellis and Lydia Lewis each scored one run.                                     

In Game 2, the two teams played to a scoreless tie through seven innings. In the top of the eighth inning, Singleterry drew a bases loaded walk to score Claire Tomberlin and give Huntingdon a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the eighth, Melton forced a foul out to Ridgway, struck out one batter and forced a ground out to Singleterry to end the game.

Coming Up: Huntingdon hosts Agnes Scott in a conference doubleheader on Wednesday. Game 1 is set for 4 p.m.
