FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Huntingdon baseball player Carden Mellown was recognized as one of the USA South Athletes of the Week on Monday.
The junior was named Pitcher of the Week. This is the second time this spring the Hueytown, Ala., native has earned the recognition and the sixth time a Huntingdon pitcher has been recognized this season.
Mellown was chosen for his performance in the 13th-ranked Hawks' 16-2 win over 17th-ranked Methodist. In the series opener, which was shortened to seven innings, Mellown pitched a complete game, struck out 10, scattered four hits, allowed two runs and did not issue a walk.
Mellown faced just three batters in five of the seven innings and held the Monarchs hitless during the final four innings.
For the season, Mellown is 3-1 in seven starts. In 39 1/3 innings, he has a 4.35 ERA, 32 strikeouts and has issued just eight walks.
