Hawks bounce back with win over Majors

JACKSON, Miss. – The Huntingdon men's lacrosse team won its fourth game this season, defeating Millsaps College 7-5 on Wednesday night.

After losing to the Majors in the first three years of the program's history, the Hawks (4-1) have won two straight against Millsaps.

After a near scoreless first quarter, sophomore Kendrick Ballard found the back of the net with 1:38 left in the first. Ballard quickly found the goal again, giving the Hawks a 2-0 lead 44 seconds later.

Millsaps answered with its first goal 18 seconds later to pull within one heading into the second quarter.  

Millsaps (2-1) tied the game three minutes into the second quarter after a Huntingdon clear attempt failed. Jakob Works added a goal with 8:45 left in the half to give the Hawks the advantage but the Majors responded 19 seconds later to tie the game.

Brandon Scheele scored with 2:29 remaining in the half to put Huntingdon up 4-3 heading into halftime.

Ballard notched his third goal 2:15 into the third with an assist from Karson Hastings. Millsaps scored two unanswered goals to take a 5-5 tie into the fourth.

After turnovers by both teams in the first part of the fourth, Scheele gave the Hawks a one goal advantage with an assist by Hastings. Works put the final of goal of the game in the back of the net with 7:43 remaining. The Hawks defense prevailed in the final minutes, denying the Majors the comeback.

Goalie Fabien Gutierrez finished with eight saves and allowed five goals. Defenseman Josh Clayton picked up five ground balls and caused four turnovers.

Sam Hitt struggled at the faceoff x, going 6-of-15 while recording three ground balls.

Works and Scheele each had two goals. Ballard doubled his season total with three goals.

Hastings added two assists and three ground balls giving him 14 assists on the year.

Huntingdon hosts Hendrix College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
