The Hawks Defeat Covenant To Stay Alive In The CCS Tournament
MARYVILLE,Tenn.- In a "win or go home" matchup, Huntingdon baseball(18-19 overall, 8-10 CCS) fell behind early, but rallied late to eliminate the Scots of Covenant College(16-26 overall) 12-6.
Highlights
- With neither team scoring any runs through the first two innings, Covenant took the lead in the bottom of the third inning, scoring three runs
- The Hawks responded to open the fourth inning, with Daniel Patton bringing home Noah Phillips to put the Hawks down 3-1
- Another Scot run in the fourth inning brought the score to 4-1 entering the fifth inning
- After holding Huntingdon scoreless in the top frame, Covenant added another run in the bottom of the fifth to push their lead to 5-1
- Huntingdon stormed back in the seventh inning with five runs to take a 6-5 lead. Hits from Noah Phillips, Daniel Patton, and John Hale secured runs from Christian Lasecki, Jordan Raley, Cade Morgan, and Matthew Robinson to put the Hawks ahead
- Still battling, Covenant evened the score at six with a run in the bottom of the seventh
- After the seventh inning, the Hawks caught fire, scoring four more runs in the eighth inning to take a 10-6 lead. Dylan Hyder opened up the scoring by crossing home plate on a Scot error, which Noah Phillips followed with a single to bring home his brother, Daniel Phillips. Another Covenant error allowed Noah Phillips and Cade Morgan to score to close out the frame with Huntingdon in front
- After holding the Scots scoreless to end the eighth inning, Daniel Phillips singled to kick off the final inning, allowing Jordan Raley to cross home plate and bring the score to 11-6
- For the Hawks final run of the game, Cade Morgan doubled to left center field, allowing Daniel Phillips to score and give Huntingdon the 12-6 victory
On the mound
- Jacob McFarling started on the mound for Huntingdon, allowing four runs on five hits through three innings
- Sam Tompkins replaced McFarling and earned the win for Huntingdon, allowing two runs on four hits with two strikeouts
- Michael Driver closed for the Hawks, allowing two hits but keeping the Scots off the board.
The Hawks return to action at the CCS tournament at 7:00 PM for a matchup against the winner of Belhaven and LaGrange.
