Hawks Baseball Falls Late To Brevard
MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Kicking off their final home tournament of the regular season before CCS play begins, Huntingdon Baseball welcomed the Tornadoes of Brevard College to Neal Posey Field.
The Hawks claimed a slight 3-2 lead in the third inning, but two seperate frames with 3 or more runs for the Tornadoes put Huntingdon away 9-6.
How it happened
Brevard struck first at just their fourth at-bat, drilling a double through the left side to score two runners and claim the early advantage. Brodie Holcomb's groundout in the bottom frame that brought home Blayne McDaniel provided an answer, but the Hawks still trailed 2-1 entering the second inning.
After a scoreless second inning, the Hawks took the lead 3-2 in the third, as Sam Kelly drove in McDaniell for his second run of the day to even things at 2 before Byron McLain's single scored Cade Morgan to give Huntingdon the lead, 3-2. The fourth and fifth innings proved to be quiet offensively, but Brevard caught fire at the plate in the top frame of the sixth inning, scoring four runs to reclaim the lead 6-3. McDaniel continued to provide life to the Hawks offense however, as this time he singled to score Brent Cadenhead, reducing the deficit to 6-4 as the game drew near.
The Tornadoes followed their explosive sixth inning with another one in the 8th, scoring three runs to extend their lead to 9-4 in the final stages. The Hawks battled through the ninth inning, with Morgan and Holcomb each crossing home plate, but Huntingdon couldn't complete the comeback, falling 9-6.
JB Landrum drew the start on the mound for Huntingdon, pitching 5 strikeouts while allowing two runs and two hits in two innings. Evan Clark relieved Landrum and picked up his second loss on the season, with Landon Nelson and Caleb Griffis each seeing time on the mound as well.
The Hawks look to bounce back tomorrow, March 8th, as they battle Millsaps College. First pitch is set for 3:30 PM CT.
