Hawks Sweep Berea And The Firehouse Classic

MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Following up on their emphatic first two victories at the Firehouse Classic this weekend, Huntingdon Baseball completed the tournament sweep and moved to a perfect 3-0 to start the season following a 10-0 win over the Berea College Mountaineers this afternoon.

After a silent first inning for both sides, largely in part due to the excellent pitching of Freshman Charlie Morgan, the Hawks scoring got rolling in the bottom of the second with a four-run frame that quickly established Huntingdon's control. Byron McLain kicked things off with a double RBI single, scoring Jabez Sampson and Sam Kelley for the first two runs of the afternoon. Brent Cadenhead followed up with a double RBI single of his own, bringing home Ethan Duhon and McLain to close out the frame. A quiet third inning paved way for Huntingdon's slow burning run-rule victory, as the Hawks scored one run in each of the following innings leading up to the 8th to bring the game to a close early. Ty Pruitt lit the spark in the bottom of the fourth, singling through the right side to score Cadenhead. Byron McLain scored in the fifth on a passed ball to make the score 6-0 before Sampson's RBI single to score Pruitt in the 6th pushed the lead to 7-0. Brent Cadenhead became the second Hawk to cross home plate on a passed ball in the 7th, raising the advantage to 8-0 before Sam Kelley and Jabez Sampson each scored in the 8th to round things out.

On the mound

Freshman Charlie Morgan of Alexander City, Alabama drew the start this afternoon and picked up the first win of his collegiate career, pitching 5 innings while surrendering just 3 hits. Reece Thomas followed Morgan with the first appearance of his young career before Will Argo and Brayden Heaps closed things out.

The Hawks will look to carry their momentum into a road contest with Emory University on Tuesday, February 10th. First pitch is set for 1:00 PM CT.
