Hawks Sweep Week 2 Of The Firehouse Classic

MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Back at Charles Lee Field for week two of the Firehouse Classic, Huntingdon Baseball continued its strong start to the season, sweeping the weekend slate and protecting home turf in impressive fashion. The Hawks opened the day with a 13-5 victory over North Carolina Wesleyan University before following it up with a 10-6 win over Mississippi University for Women to close out the tournament weekend.

Game One: Huntingdon-13, North Carolina Wesleyan-5

After a scoreless first inning, the Hawks struck first in the bottom of the second. Byron McLain delivered an RBI triple to right center to plate Jabez Sampson for the first run of the contest. Dalton Kuhn followed with an RBI groundout, pushing the lead to 2-0.

North Carolina Wesleyan answered with a sacrifice fly in the top of the third to cut the deficit to 2-1, but Huntingdon regained momentum in the fourth. Sampson swiped third and came around to score on a throwing error before Brent Cadenhead added an RBI single to stretch the advantage to 4-1.

The Hawks broke things open in the fifth inning. Brodie Holcomb lined an RBI single to left, a passed ball allowed another run to cross, and Sampson roped a two-RBI single up the middle to extend the lead to 8-1. Huntingdon continued to pour it on in the sixth, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Sam Kelley and another RBI knock from Sampson to make it 11-1.

The Battling Bishops mounted a brief rally in the seventh, plating four runs on a pair of extra-base hits to trim the margin to 11-5. However, the Hawks quickly responded in the eighth. Sampson doubled home another run before Cadenhead lifted a sacrifice fly to center to cap the scoring at 13-5.

Huntingdon tallied 16 hits in the contest, led by Sampson's 4-for-4 performance with three RBI and two stolen bases. Kelley finished with three hits, including a double and a triple, while Holcomb added three hits of his own. McLain chipped in with a triple and two runs scored.

On the mound, Jable Ramey improved to 2-0 on the season, allowing just one run on four hits over six innings while striking out seven. Colin Murphy provided key relief, striking out three over 1.1 scoreless frames to help secure the victory.

Game Two: Huntingdon- 10, MUW- 6

Huntingdon wasted no time getting on the board in game two, as Ty Pruitt drove in Blayne McDaniel with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the first to give the Hawks an early 1-0 lead.

Mississippi University for Women responded with three runs across the third and fourth innings to take a 3-1 advantage, but the Hawks answered in the bottom of the fourth. Sam Kelley ignited the rally with a solo home run before Jay Davidson delivered a two-RBI single that turned into a three-base advance on a fielding error, giving Huntingdon a 4-3 lead. Ben Mosely followed with an RBI single to extend the margin to 5-3.

The Owls battled back in the seventh, stringing together three runs to reclaim a 6-5 advantage. With momentum beginning to swing, the Hawks responded emphatically in the bottom half of the inning. Mosely reached on an error to plate the tying run before Brodie Holcomb delivered the decisive blow — a towering grand slam that cleared the bases and put Huntingdon back in front, 10-6.

Holcomb finished with four RBI on the afternoon, while Davidson drove in two and Mosely added two of his own. Kelley also homered as part of an eight-hit team effort.

Charlie Morgan picked up the win after tossing four innings, allowing three runs while striking out two. MD Johnson provided key middle relief with four strikeouts across three innings, and Brent Cadenhead shut the door in the ninth to secure the sweep.

With the pair of victories, the Hawks complete a perfect week two of the Firehouse Classic and continue to build momentum early in the 2026 campaign. They'll return home for week three of the Firehouse Classic on February 21st, kicking things off against Spalding University. Gametime is set for 12:00 PM CT.
