Hawks Taken Down In Midweek Heartbreaker At Millsaps

JACKSON, Miss.- Hitting the road for a quick stop in their otherwise 18 game home stretch, Huntingdon Baseball took to the field for a rematch of last season's regional tournament against the Majors of Millsaps College. Despite jumping out to an 8-0 lead, the Hawks couldn't hang on, falling 12-11 in 12 innings to their non-conference rival.

The Hawks erupted early, plating five runs in the third and three more in the fifth to build an 8-0 advantage. Sam Kelley led the charge with three hits and three RBI, while Brodie Holcomb added two hits and two RBI. Drew Jolley doubled twice and drove in a run, and Jabez Sampson launched a solo homer in the eighth as part of a three-run day.

After being held scoreless through four innings, Millsaps broke through with a five-run fifth to cut the deficit to 8-5, then added a solo home run in the seventh to make it 8-6. Huntingdon answered with three runs in the ninth to stretch the lead to 11-7, highlighted by RBI singles from Holcomb and Kelley, but the Majors rallied in the bottom of the ninth, scoring four runs to tie the game at 11-11 on a pair of RBI singles and a sacrifice fly. The game remained deadlocked until the 12th, when a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded forced in the winning run.

Huntingdon finished with 17 hits in the loss. Charlie Morgan tossed three scoreless innings in relief, and Brent Cadenhead struck out four over two innings, but Brady Mason (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing the deciding run in the 12th.

The Hawks will look to bounce back on Friday, February 27th at home as they kick off week four of the Firehouse Classic against another regional foe from a year ago, the East Texas Baptist University Tigers. First pitch is set for 3:30 PM CT.
