Hawks Open Series With Win Over Covenant
MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Following up on their conference-opening series sweep of LaGrange at home a week ago, Huntingdon Baseball improved to 16-4 on the year and 4-0 in conference action with a 9-4 win in tonight's series opener against the Scots of Covenant College.
Huntingdon struck first in the second inning, taking advantage of a Covenant error that allowed Jabez Sampson to score. Later in the inning, Brent Cadenhead delivered an RBI single to plate Drew Jolley and make it 2–0.
The Hawks added to their lead in the fourth as Jay Davidson singled up the middle to bring home Drew Jolley, and Brent Cadenhead followed with a productive groundout that scored Mikael Bryant, stretching the lead to 4–0.
Huntingdon continued to apply pressure in the sixth, when Brent Cadenhead came through again with a two-RBI double down the left field line, scoring Jay Davidson and Mikael Bryant to push the advantage to 6–0.
Covenant answered in the seventh with a four-run inning, capitalizing on walks and timely hits to cut the deficit to 6–4.
The Hawks wasted no time responding in the bottom half. Brodie Holcomb lined an RBI single to score Sam Kelley, and Jay Davidson followed with a clutch two-RBI double to bring home Jabez Sampson and Brodie Holcomb, extending the lead to 9–4.
Huntingdon's offense was led by Jay Davidson, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, while also swiping a base. Brent Cadenhead drove in a game-high four runs, finishing with a pair of hits including a double. Brodie Holcomb added three hits and an RBI, while Drew Jolley scored twice and collected two hits of his own. Mikael Bryant also crossed the plate twice and reached base multiple times.
On the mound, Jacob McFarling earned the win, going 6.2 innings while allowing four runs on five hits and striking out nine. Will Argo provided 1.1 innings of scoreless relief, and Sam Tompkins closed it out with a clean ninth to secure the victory.
The Hawks close out their series with Covenant tomorrow, March 21st, in a double-header. Games are set for 1:00 and 4:00 PM CT.
