Smith Tosses Four Touchdown Passes As Hawks Soar Past Methodist
FAYETTEVILLE, NC.- In their second consecutive USA South matchup Huntingdon Hawks football (3-2 overall, 3-0 USA South) flew past the Monarchs of Methodist University(1-5 overall, 1-3 USA South), putting on an offensive display en route to a 42-0 victory.
How it happened
Receiving the opening kickoff, the Hawks struck first on their opening drive, with Dorian Smith tossing his first touchdown of the afternoon on a 20 yard pass to Brody Covington to bring an end to the Hawks 11 play, 72 yard drive.
Feeding off of the energy of Huntingdon's first offensive drive, the Hawks defense forced a three-and-out on their opening possession, with Jahmir Cromblin disrupting a Monarch pass attempt to give the Hawks possession with 8 minutes remaining in the opening quarter. Similar to the first drive, Dorian Smith led the Hawks down the field, once again finding Brody Covington, this time 31 yards out, for their second touchdown connection of the afternoon to put the Huntingdon ahead 14-0 entering the second quarter.
As the second quarter got underway, the Hawks offense couldn't find a rhythm, going three-and-out. The Monarchs responded on the following possession with a promising drive, featuring several chunk plays, before an 18 yard sack by Joe Brunson brought an end to the possession at the 9 minute mark in the quarter. The Hawks offense wasted no time taking advantage of Brunson's sack, cashing in on a 4 play, 38 yard drive that saw Dorian Smith find RJ White on a 21 yard touchdown pass to extend Huntingdon's lead to 21-0 with 7 minutes remaining until halftime. Picking up where they left off, Huntingdon's defense forced yet another three-and-out before Dorian Smith found Sam Bloodworth on a 83 yard strike for six to give Huntingdon a 28-0 lead with five minutes to go until halftime.
After a Monarch's first down on the ensuing possession, Ricky Spence recorded his second sack on the season, setting up the Hawks offense for another opportunity to score before the break. Huntingdon's offense would be forced to punt, but the defense held strong, as Jacoby Young blocked a Monarch field goal within the final seconds of the quarter to maintain the Hawks 28-0 lead entering halftime.
Coming out of the locker room, Huntingdon's defense would force another three-and-out on Methodist's opening possession. On the ensuing possession, the Hawks' offense couldn't take advantage, bringing on Landon Pulliam to punt. The teams would then trade punts, leaving the score at 28-0 entering the final quarter.
On Huntingdon's first possession of the fourth quarter, runningback James Cheatham would find the endzone from two yards out to push the Hawks lead to 35-0 with 13:35 remaining in the game. After forcing three consecutive stops, a 1 yard touchdown run from Kamern Daniels would put a stamp on Huntingdon's dominant performance, giving the Hawks a 42-0 victory.
