Hawks Escape Greensboro With Narrow Victory Over The Pride
GREENSBORO, North Carolina- Off the heels of their 26-0 homecoming shutout victory against Methodist, Huntingdon Football returned to USA South action on Saturday, traveling to face the Pride of Greensboro College. The Hawks managed to move to 12-0 all-time against the Pride, securing a 17-10 road victory en route to a 3-2 overall record on the season and 2-0 record in conference play.
Deferring to the second half after winning the coin toss, the Hawks started on defense, surrendering their first points in conference play this season following a 18 play, 76-yard drive that resulted in a Greensboro field goal that put the Pride in front 3-0 by the 7:22 mark in the quarter. Offensively, Huntingdon answered quickly, as De'Roderick Hepburn carried the Hawks first possession, recording 31 of the teams total 52 total yards on a drive that ended with a Collyer Alderman field goal, evening things 3-3 with a little over three minutes remaining in the quarter.
As the first quarter came to a close and the second quarter got underway, both offenses stalled, as the two squads traded punts on the following two possessions. The Pride broke things open and reclaimed the lead with 9:49 remaining in the half, finding the endzone on a 8-yard rush at the end of a 9 play, 50-yard drive, moving in front 10-3 approaching halftime. The teams traded punts yet again on the ensuing two possessions, making way for Huntingdon to even things up a 10 by the 3:15 mark, as Knox Roberts connected with Timothy McReynolds from 33-yards out to make the halftime score 10-10.
Coming out of the locker rooms for the second half, neither offense could find their footing, as Huntingdon's 27-yard field goal on their first possession was blocked and Greensboro was forced to punt. That being said, the Hawks captured their first lead of the contest at the 5:04 mark in the third quarter, as McReynolds found paydirt on a 5-yard pass from Jake White to put Huntingdon in front, 17-10.
Coming down the stretch of the game, Greensboro had their chances to tie things up, but Huntingdon's defense remained solid, forcing two turnovers on downs and a punt to remain in control and claim the 17-10 victory.
