Huntingdon Flag Football Set To Begin Inaugural Campaign This Weekend
MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Huntingdon Women's Flag Football has released their 2025 season slate.
The Hawks season-opener is set for this Saturday, February 1st, as they play host to the Division I Alabama State Hornets, who also are in their inaugural season.
The February 1st showdown between the Hawks and Hornets serves not only as the first contest between the two teams, but also as the first collegiate women's flag football game in the state of Alabama.
"Our vision a few years ago in the sponsorship of a varsity women's flag football program, was to provide high school players in the state of Alabama, as well as the region, with a place where they could continue to play the sport they love," shared Huntingdon Director of Athletics Eric Levanda. "Coach Rowe has done a great job fostering that vision and promoting Huntingdon College as being a place for young women to grow as future leaders, as well as play their sport.
When asked about the significance of hosting the first ever collegiate game on Huntingdon's campus, Levanda also stated that, "Making history at the collegiate level wasn't the first thing on my mind when we decided to move forward with women's flag football, but now that we are here, I'm extremely proud and excited that our women and Coach Rowe are in this position to host the first women's varsity collegiate flag football game in the state of Alabama here in the Capital City vs our neighbors, Alabama State. We hope high school players in the state are inspired by this game taking place."
Huntingdon President Anthony Leigh shared that "our flag football student-athletes have already made a positive name for themselves in the classroom and in their engagement in the life of the college. I'm excited to see our college family and the Cloverdale neighborhood come out to show their support for them when they take the field on Saturday."
Discussing the significance of this weekend, Head Coach Angela Rowe stated that "This is an exciting time for Huntingdon and the inaugural team. These young ladies possess the grit and commitment required to start a new program. They will make history on Saturday, and I feel deeply honored for the opportunity to coach them and be a part of their history."
The Hawks look to field a young squad, with 16 of the 19 players being freshman. The team will look to the upperclassman leadership of Tierra Russell, Ashley Sajous, and Kylah Rome as they embark on the program's inaugural season.
The Hawks follow their historical season-opener with a double-header in Florida, facing Daytona State and UCF before traveling to face LaGrange in a Division III showdown. The Hawks return home on March 1st, hosting Life University and Alabama State, before traveling to Tennessee to take on Campbellsville and Milligan. A trip to Reinhardt marks the final stop on their road trip before returning to Samford Stadium to face LaGrange on March 15th. The Hawks close their season after a double-header at Life University with a home set against Rockford and Milligan.
