Hawks Taken Down By Life Before Completing Season Sweep Of Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Returning to Samford Stadium for the first time since February 1st, Huntingdon Flag Football hosted Life University and Alabama State in a tri-match.

The Hawks were taken down by Life 39-13 in their first game, but recovered in a 24-12 win over ASU.

Game One v. Life

The Running Eagles got off to a fast start, receiving the ball on the first possession of the game and scoring in 11 plays to take an early 7-0 lead. The Hawks looked to answer on their first possession, but after a lengthy 12 play drive, Huntingdon's offense stalled, flipping possession back to Life.

Life put together another solid offensive drive after forcing the turnover on downs, going  down the field in 10 plays to extend their lead to 14-0 in the early stages of the second quarter. Huntingdon responded on the ensuing drive with their first score of the game, with Emily Stricklin finding the endzone on the end of a 3 yard rush to bring the score to 14-7 with halftime looming. The Running Eagles continued to move the ball effectively on the next drive, scoring in just 1 minute and 28 seconds to take a 20-7 lead into the halftime break.

Huntingdon came out of halftime with a renewed energy, as Emily Stricklin connected with De'Aysia Williams to bring cut the deficit to 20-13 by the 8 minute mark in the quarter. Not to be outdone however, the Screaming Eagles scored yet again on the following possession to extend their lead back to double-digits, 26-13 entering the fourth quarter.

As the fourth quarter got underway, Life controlled the pace from the onset, scoring touchdowns on their final two possessions while keeping the Hawks scoreless to walk away with the win, 39-13.

Game Two v. Asu

Facing off for the second time this season, the Hawks struck first on their opening drive, as Mary Wade Latham found Megan Connor to give Huntingdon an early advantage, 6-0. Huntingdon managed to extend their lead to 12-0 shortly after, forcing a turnover on downs before Hiryaunna Mays found the endzone on a 16 yard catch and run to bring an end to the first quarter.

The Hornets found their way onto the scoreboard for the first time at Samford Stadium on their first drive of the second quarter, cutting the Hawks lead to 12-6. Huntingdon answered two possessions later with another connection between Latham and Connor to bring the Hawks halftime lead to 18-6.

Throughout the third quarter, neither offense could generate enough momentum to find the endzone. Alabama State's defense started the fourth quarter off with a bang, returning an interception for a touchdown to cut Huntingdon's lead to 18-12 with 11 minutes remaining. On the ensuing possession, Emily Stricklin checked back into the game, leading Huntingdon on a 12 play, 52 yard drive that resulted in a Brooke Shelton touchdown that iced the game, moving the Hawks to 2-3 on the year as they picked up another win over the Hornets, 24-12.

The Hawks look to keep rolling on March 8th, traveling to Milligan to face the Buffs and Campbellsville in a tri-match.
