Hawks Pick Up First USA South Victory Of The Season Against Brevard
MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Taking to Charles Lee Field at Samford Stadium for their first USA South matchup of the season, Huntingdon men's lacrosse followed up a scoreless first quarter with seven in the second quarter to fuel their 14-4 runaway victory over the Tornadoes of Brevard College.
How it happened
As previously mentioned, the opening quarter of this matchup featured no goals. Huntingdon goalkeepers Liam Angst and Kade Bankovich each recorded multiple saves for the Hawks in a defensive effort that generated offensive momentum as the second quarter got underway.
The early stages of the second quarter were dominated offensively by Huntingdon's freshman attackman, Jaxon Mcmonigle. Jaxon scored three back-to-back goals by the 7 and a half minute mark to put the Hawks ahead. Kelcey Marston followed Mcmonigle with a goal of his own off an assist from Josh Knost that extended the lead to 4-0 just 30 seconds later. The Tornadoes momentarily stopped the bleeding with a goal at the 5:58 mark, but the Hawks picked up right where they left off at the 3:25 mark, as Marston put in his second goal of the game to bring the score to 5-1. As the half drew near, both Connor Angst and Mcmonigle were able to get past Brevard's keeper, putting in shots to bring the Hawks halftime lead to 7-1.
Similar to Mcmonigle's offensive explosion in the second quarter, Kelcey Marston scored back-to-back goals of his own as the second half got underway, pushing the Hawks lead to 9-1 by the 11 minute mark in the quarter. The only other goal of the third quarter belonged to Brevard, as they snuck one past Angst to bring the score to 9-2 entering the fourth quarter.
Josh Knost scored his first goal of the afternoon at the 11:58 mark in the quarter to bring the Huntingdon lead to 10-2 before Tristan Dial followed up with one of his own to bring the score to 11-2 with 10 minutes remaining. Mason Honeycutt's goal just 40 seconds later gave the Hawks a double-digit advantage, 12-2. Brevard put in two more goals as the game drew to a close, but scores from Dial and JT Klam put the game on ice, moving the Hawks to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in USA South play with a 14-4 victory over the Tornadoes.
