Hawks Pick Up Crucial USA South Victory At Home Against Greensboro
MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Looking to bring their six game losing streak to an end at home, Huntingdon Men's Lacrosse welcomed the Pride of Greensboro College to Samford Stadium for a late-season USA South matchup.
Led by junior attackman Kelcey Marston, the Hawks pulled out a 10-7 victory at home, righting the ship as the Huntingdon comes down the home stretch of the regular season.
How it happened
The opening stages of the game were dictated by each squad's goalkeeper, as neither team found their way onto the scoreboard in the first 10 minutes. Hawks goalie Liam Angst put on a clinic as the game got underway, recording three saves on as many Greensboro shots. The Pride eventually broke the ice with back-to-back goals with a little less than five minutes to go in the quarter, but Huntingdon roared back, as Ky Rayford and Kelcey Marston combined to score three unanswered goals, giving the Hawks a 3-2 advantage entering the second quarter.
Greensboro opened the second quarter with two goals in the first two minutes to reclaim a slight 4-3 advantage, but Rayford continued to shoulder the load for Huntingdon offensively, putting in his second goal of the afternoon off an assist from Jaxon Mcmonigle to even things with 9:30 remaining until halftime. Things slowed down offensively for both teams as the half drew near, but a heads-up play from Connor Angst off a wild pass from Marston inside the final 20 seconds put the Hawks in front at halftime 5-4.
Marston picked up where he left off in the first half as the third quarter got underway, scoring the only two goals of the quarter, one off an assist from Tristan Dial, to extend the Huntingdon lead to 7-4 with one quarter remaining. The Pride put in a goal early to cut the deficit to 7-5, but Mcmonigle answered with his first goal of the afternoon to bring the score to 8-5. Ky Rayford followed up with his third goal of the game off an assist from Mcmonigle at the 11:48 mark before Tristan Dial's goal at the 5:47 mark put the game on ice. Greensboro put in two goals late as they tried to muster a comeback effort, but the Hawks held on for a 10-7 conference victory.
