#25 Softball Sweeps Opening Day Double-Header Against Centre And Greensboro

MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Taking to Lucinda Samford Cannon Field for the first time in their 2025 campaign, Huntingdon Softball played host to the Centre College Colonels and the Greensboro Pride in the Firehouse Classic.

The #25 ranked Hawks handled business in their opening double-header, taking down Centre 8-0 in game one before defeating Greensboro 10-4 in game two.

Game One

The Hawks got off to a fast start defensively, as Allie Roberts struck out the first three Centre batters, all swinging. This made way for Huntingdon's first run in the bottom frame of the first inning, as Miranda Treadway's single brought home Maddie Grace Hubbard to put the first score on the board. Jordan Holman crossed home plate for the first time this season shortly after, with the Colonels walking Kylie Stephens as the bases were loaded to bring the Hawks lead to 2-0 entering the second inning.

Roberts continued to dominate on the mound, not allowing any hits through the second and third innings. The Hawks capitalized, with Holman scoring on a passed ball to raise Huntingdon's lead to 3-0. The Colonels earned their first hit in the fourth inning, but Huntingdon continued to pour it on, as Kamryn Miller extended the lead to 4-0 on an error before Hubbard found home plate to bring things to 5-0. Treadway earned her 2nd RBI shortly after, flying out to bring home Amya Wommack as the lead grew to 7-0. Another RBI single for Treadway in the sixth inning brought the game to a close, advancing Katie Burch home and giving the Hawks an 8-0 win.

Sophomore Allie Roberts followed her excellent freshman campaign with a hot start in her sophomore year, limiting Centre to 1 hit while striking out 7 Colonels.

Game Two

Huntingdon allowed their first run of the day in the opening frame against Greensboro, as the Pride reached home on a sacrifice fly to take an early 1-0 lead. Elli Lorance responded in the bottom frame with a single bringing in Katie Burch to even things up before the second inning. The Pride reclaimed their lead in the third inning with two runs to go back in front 3-1, but once again, the Hawks battled back, this time with a three run rally in the bottom frame. Kylie Stephens brought home both Lorance and Riley Rudick with a single to tie things at 3 before Kate Dinkel's RBI single gave Huntingdon the lead 4-3. Greensboro managed to tie things once again with a RBI double in the 4th inning, but from that point on the Hawks controlled the pace of the game.

The first of Huntingdon's 4 runs in the 4th inning came from Miranda Treadway, as her sacrifice fly brought in Jordan Holman to bring the score to 5-4. Dinkel then followed up by bringing in Lorance and Stephens to grow the lead to 7-4 before Maddie Grace Hubbard returned the favor to Dinkel, bringing her home with a single up the middle as Huntingdon's lead grew to 8-4. Amya Wommack advanced home following a passed ball in the 5th inning to bring the score to 9-4 before Kamryn Miller's RBI single in the 6th handed the Hawks their second win of the day, 10-4.

Madison Fruge drew the start for the Hawks, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits through 2.1 innings. Allie Roberts relieved Fruge and earned her second win on the day, allowing 1 run on 2 hits before McKenzie Little closed the game for the Hawks.

The Firehouse Classic continues tomorrow, February 16th. The Hawks take the field at 1:00 vs Greensboro before wrapping things up with Centre at 3:00 PM CT.
