Roberts Pitches No-Hitter As #9 Huntingdon Softball Takes Care Of Business At LaGrange
LAGRANGE, Ga.- After securing two run-rule victories at home against Covenant in a conference series, #9 Huntingdon Softball returned to action today, this time traveling to face LaGrange College in another CCS series.
The Hawks made quick work of the Panthers, capturing an 11-0 victory in five innings for the first game before claiming victory 5-3 in the second. Sophomore standout Allie Roberts continued her excellent season with a no-hitter in game one of today's double-header, making that the second of her career and the second no-hitter for Huntingdon in the last 3 days.
Game One
Huntingdon gained control of this game from the onset, scoring five runs in the opening frame. Kate Dinkel got things going with a RBI single to score Jordan Holman before an error made way for Riley Rudick and Miranda Treadway to cross home plate, bringing the Hawks lead to 3-0. Dinkel crossed home plate shortly after before Mandy Cannon's RBI double secured a run for Kylie Stephens, closing the inning with Huntingdon firmly in control.
Holman picked up right where the Hawks left off in the first inning in the second, drilling a single-shot home run over the fence to raise the advantage to 6-0. Stephens then singled to score Treadway for the second time of the game as the lead grew to 7-0. Dinkel's second run of the day made way for Mandy Cannon's second double of the afternoon, bringing the lead to 8-0 at the end of the inning. In the top of the fourth, freshman Amaya Wommack hit her 3rd career home run, scoring both herself and Rudick to give Huntingdon the 11-0 win in five innings.
As mentioned before, Allie Roberts pitched all five innings for the Hawks, throwing a no hitter. En route to victory, Roberts struck out seven Panthers, controlling the pace of the game from the mound to secure Huntingdon's victory.
Game Two
The second game of the series started much like the first, with Miranda Treadway's 10th home run of the season handing Huntingdon an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. The following three innings proved to be quiet offensively for both teams, with neither squad recording a base hit, but the Hawks resumed scoring in the fifth inning, with Jordan Holman's sacrifice fly bringing home Mandy Cannon to push the lead to 3-0. Kylie Stephens followed up in the sixth inning, drilling a single to right center, allowing Amaya Wommack and Kate Dinkel to score as the Hawks lead grew to 5-0. The Panthers put together three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning in an attempted comeback effort, but the Hawks managed to hang on, taking the conference series with a 5-3 victory.
Madisyn Fruge pitched all seven innings in the circle for Huntingdon, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out four batters.
