#9 Softball Sweeps Piedmont To Top The CCS Standings
MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Coming off of a conference double-header sweep at LaGrange earlier this week, #9 Huntingdon Softball played host to the Piedmont Lions, a matchup headlined by major CCS implications with both teams sitting in the first and second spots in the conference. Ultimately, the Hawks pulled through at home, sweeping both games against the Lions by scores of 5-1 and 7-2.
By claiming both games today, the Hawks move to first in the conference, holding an overall record of 28-3 and a conference record of 11-1. Belhaven University now sits in second with a conference record of 12-2 and Piedmont rounds out the top three with a 9-3 CCS record.
Prior to the start of the game, former Huntingdon Softball Head Coach Angela Cook threw out the first pitch. Additionally, the Hawks bullpen was dedicated in loving memory of her daughter, Megan Cook.
Game One
The first two innings of this matchup were relatively quietly offensively, with just four recorded hits being shared between the two teams. Huntingdon finally broke the ice in the third inning, as Miranda Treadway's single made way for Kamryn Miller and Maddie Grace Hubbard to score as the Hawks took the 2-0 advantage. Their lead grew to 3-0 in the fourth, as Amaya Wommack's single through the left side scored Kate Dinkel to extend Huntingdon's lead. A Piedmont error in the fifth inning proved to distance the two teams even further, with Hubbard crossing home plate to make the score 4-0 before Dinkel scored off a sacrifice fly from Amaya Wommack to raise the Huntingdon lead to 5-0 with one inning remaining. The Lions tacked on a run late, but the Hawks held on to secure game one of the series, 5-1.
Allie Roberts pitched a complete game for Huntingdon and moved to 16-1 on the season, allowing one run on 8 hits while throwing 5 strikeouts.
Game Two
Game two started much like the first, as the opening two innings saw no runs scored for either team. Huntingdon then exploded in the third inning, scoring four runs on as many hits in the third inning to distance themselves. Miranda Treadway got things going with her 11th home run on the season, securing runs for Jordan Holman and Maddie Grace Hubbard along the way as Huntingdon grabbed a 3-0 advantage before Riley Rudick made her way home off a RBI double from Kate Dinkel to push the lead to 4-0. Piedmont answered with a run off a Huntingdon error in the following frame, but it was quickly matched by a sacrifice fly from Holman, bringing Mandy Cannon across home plate as the Hawks lead remained at four runs, 5-1.
After a quiet fifth inning, the Lions tacked on another run in the sixth inning to cut Huntingdon's lead to 5-2 coming down the stretch, but Jordan Holman answered with a two-run homer, bringing the Hawks lead to 7-2 late, putting them into position to collect their fourth CCS sweep of the season.
Madisyn Fruge picked up her seventh win pitching all 7 innings in the circle for the Hawks, throwing 4 strikeouts while holding the Lions to just 5 hits and 2 runs as Huntingdon secured the victory.
Hawks Softball returns to action tomorrow, April 13th as they host Agnes Scott College for Senior Day. Games are set for 1:00 and 3:00 PM.
