#9 Softball Avenges Last Season's Regional Tournament Loss With Double-Header Sweep Of Berry

MONTGOMERY, Ala.- After the Vikings eliminated the Hawks from last year's NCAA Regional Tournament in the most previous matchup between the two squads, Huntingdon welcomed Berry back to Lucinda Samford Cannon Field for a non-conference double-header as the 2025 regular season starts to wind down.

This time, the #9 ranked Hawks took care of business, sweeping the Vikings with a narrow 5-3 victory in game one before taking a 7-0 shutout victory in game two.

Game One

Through the first three innings, neither team could find their groove at the plate, as the Vikings recorded the lone base hit between the two teams in the opening frame. the Hawks found their stride in the bottom of the fourth, with Kate Dinkel's double bringing Taylor Au and Riley Rudick home to give Huntingdon the first lead of the game, 2-0. Two at-bats later, Amaya Wommack returned the favor to Dinkel, singling to left field to make the lead 3-0 entering the fifth inning.

Not to be outdone however, the Vikings stormed back with three runs of their own in the fifth inning to bring the score back to even, 3-0. Huntingdon's Miranda Treadway picked up an RBI single in the following frame, securing a run for Maddie Grace Hubbard as the Hawks jumped back in front 4-3 with two innings left. After three consecutive Berry outs, Amaya Wommack put the game on ice in the bottom of the sixth, hitting her fourth home run of the season to bring the final score to 5-3.

Allie Roberts moved to 18-1 on the season in her 18th start of the season, throwing 8 strikeouts while allowing just three hits on the game. Madisyn Fruge saw time on the mound in the fourth inning, but Roberts was put back in to close things out.

Game Two

The Hawks gathered control quickly in the second game, scoring three runs in the first inning to secure the early advantage. Kate Dinkel got things going with a RBI single, scoring Maddie Grace Hubbard before a passed ball allowed for Taylor Au to cross home plate and raise the Huntingdon lead to 2-0. To close the frame, Mandy Cannon made her way home off a walk at Riley Rudick's at bat, bringing the score to 3-0. The Hawks tacked on to their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, with a groundout from Miranda Treadway bringing Hubbard across again as the lead grew to 4-0.

Huntingdon's lead jumped to 7-0 in the fifth inning, with three runs widening the gap even further. Mandy Cannon's sacrifice fly brought home Dinkel to get things going, but Maddie Grace Hubbard's double two at-bats later proved to be icing on the cake, sending Amaya Wommack and Lauren Watts home as the Hawks walked away with the 7-0 win.

Freshman Addison Gaines improved to 7-1 on the season pitching all seven innings for the Hawks today, striking out seven while surrendering just one hit as the Huntingdon shut out the Vikings.

The Hawks close out their regular season tomorrow, April 19th, at Wesleyan College. Games are set for 2:00 and 4:00 PM CT.
