MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Looking to respond following their loss to Millsaps a week ago, Huntingdon Softball answered in a big way, sweeping the Lions of Mt. St. Joseph in a double-header with scores of 10-5 and 4-1.
Game One; Huntingdon-10, MSJU-5
The Hawks leaned on extra-base power and a decisive sixth inning to take the opener. Huntingdon jumped out early, scoring twice in the first inning, highlighted by Kamryn Miller stealing home. After the Lions erased a 3-0 deficit and later tied the game at 5-5 through four innings, the Hawks responded with authority. Kaylin Fincher and Kylie Stephens launched back-to-back solo home runs in the third to regain momentum, but it was the sixth inning that broke things open. Kate Dinkel delivered a two-run triple to put Huntingdon back in front, Riley Rudick followed with a sacrifice fly, and Stephens added an RBI double before Payton Gilchrist capped the four-run frame with a run-scoring single. Stephens led the way, going 3-for-3 with a home run, double, and three RBIs. Dinkel added a triple and two RBIs, while Miller scored twice and stole two bases. In the circle, McKenzie Little earned the win in relief, tossing 3.1 scoreless innings and striking out five to close the door.
Game Two: Huntingdon-4, MSJU-1
The Hawks carried their momentum into the second game, manufacturing runs early and riding a complete-game effort from Addison Gaines. Huntingdon plated two runs in the first inning and added another in the second on Lana Gonzales' RBI single. After Mt. St. Joseph trimmed the lead to 3-1 in the third, the Hawks answered with an insurance run in the fifth on a fielder's choice off the bat of Rudick. Gaines was in control throughout, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out six across seven innings. Offensively, Huntingdon drew eight walks and swiped five bases, with Maddie Grace Hubbard reaching base four times and stealing three bags.
The Hawks will look to keep rolling on Saturday, February 28th as they kick off the Rhodes Invitational with a double-header against Mary-Hardin Baylor. Games are set for 12:00 and 2:00 PM CT.
