#8 Softball Sweeps Conference Double-Header At Piedmont
DEMOREST, Ga.- Hitting the road for the first time in conference play, #8 Huntingdon Softball improved to 21-4 overall and 5-1 in CCS action in a double-header sweep at Piedmont. The Hawks walked away with a 2-1 game one victory before closing things out with a 6-5 comeback win.
Game One
Huntingdon scattered eight hits on the afternoon, with Rudick leading the way with a pair of knocks, while Fincher and Gilchrist each added key contributions. The Hawks showed patience at the plate as well, drawing four walks to keep pressure on throughout.
In the circle, Allie Roberts was dominant once again, tossing a complete game to improve to 9-1 on the season. She allowed just four hits and one earned run while striking out six, consistently working out of trouble and keeping the opposition off balance.
The lone run allowed came in the fifth, but Roberts and the Hawks' defense shut things down the rest of the way to secure the 2-1 win and open the doubleheader with a victory.
Game Two
The Hawks struck first in the third inning as Taylor Au delivered an RBI single to plate the game's opening run. However, Huntingdon quickly found itself trailing after a five-run inning by the home team in the bottom half.
Trailing 5-1, the Hawks responded immediately in the fourth. Amaya Wommack came through with a clutch two-run double to cut into the deficit, and Payton Gilchrist followed with a sacrifice fly to bring Huntingdon within one at 5-4.
The momentum continued in the fifth when Au came around to score and Kaylin Fincher drove in the tying run with a sacrifice fly. One inning later, Gilchrist delivered again, lifting her second sacrifice fly of the game to score Kinley Hutto and give the Hawks a 6-5 lead.
In the circle, McKenzie Little was outstanding in relief, earning the win after tossing four shutout innings and allowing just five hits while keeping the opposition off the scoreboard. Allie Roberts came on to close things out, recording the final two outs to secure the save.
Huntingdon totaled six runs on six hits, with Wommack and Gilchrist each driving in two runs, while Au added a pair of hits and an RBI. The Hawks also capitalized on disciplined baserunning and timely situational hitting to complete the comeback victory.
The Hawks will look to keep rolling on April 3rd at #21 Belhaven. Games are set for 1:00 and 3:00 PM CT.
