Davis And Ford Find Their Groove As Huntingdon Defeats MUW
COLUMBUS, Miss.- Hitting the road for the second time in their first three games, Huntingdon women's basketball(1-2 overall) defeated the Owls of MUW(0-2 overall) 87-73, with Kinstin Davis leading the way for Huntingdon's electric offense.
First Quarter
- Destiny Grider knifed through the lane to put up the first two points of the night on the team's opening possession, but the Owls responded to take a 4-2 lead shortly thereafter.
- After trading baskets, Deshauna Foote put in a layup to tie the score at 8 with 4:34 remaining in the quarter
- MUW followed a Makayla Ford layup with back-to-back three pointers to go ahead 16-10 with 2:30 remaining in the quarter
- Trailing 21-15, baskets from Ashanti Thomas and Charity Shaw closed the period with Huntingdon trailing 21-19
Second Quarter
- Kennedy-Ryan Jackson opened the second quarter with a short jumper to tie the game at 21
- At the 7:53 mark, Briana Stuckey found room around the basket to give the Hawks a 25-24 lead, their first since the opening possession of the game
- A quick four-point swing in favor of the Owls flipped the lead back to MUW, 28-25, with 7 minutes remaining until halftime
- Makayla Ford's second triple of the game at the 3:56 mark allowed Huntingdon to tie the game at 31 before two Charity Shaw free throws put the Hawks back in front 33-31.
- Even at 33, the Hawks closed the half on a 7-0 run fueled by Kinstin Davis to enter the break up 40-33
Third Quarter
- Picking up where she left off in the first half, Davis scored five of Huntingdon's first seven points to give the Hawks a 47-36 advantage with 8:19 remaining in the quarter
- Consecutive jumpers from Destiny Grider gave Huntingdon their biggest lead of the half, 57-41, by the 4:11 mark
- The Owls opened up a 6-0 scoring run to cut the deficit to 57-47 with three minutes remaining until the final quarter, even reaching inside single digits at the 1:56 mark with a free throw making the score 60-51.
- As the quarter came to a close, the two teams continued to trade free throws. Two successful attempts for MUW brought the score to 64-55 entering the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter
- Following three MUW points to get the fourth quarter underway, Kinstin Davis and Briana Stuckey responded to put Huntingdon's lead back at double-digits, growing the Hawk advantage to 68-58
- A 8-2 Huntingdon run featuring baskets from Foote, Davis, Ford, and Stuckey gave Huntingdon a solid 77-63 lead with four minutes to go
- The Owls sank back-to-back threes on their following possessions to dig into the lead, but another triple from Makayla Ford served as the dagger, with Huntingdon holding on to take the 87-73 victory
