Hawks Taken Down By Maryville

MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Looking to avenge their loss to Asbury from yesterday, Huntingdon women's basketball returned to action against Maryville this afternoon. After a back-and-forth three quarters featuring 8 ties and 10 lead changes, the Scots outscored the Hawks 15-7 in the final period to claim the 56-48 victory.

First Quarter

  • The two teams were even through the opening stages of the game, with Briana McGruder's free throw at the 5:23 mark tying things at 8.
  • The Scots finished a layup at the 2:54 mark to reclaim a lead 10-8. After another basket brought their lead to 12-8, Kennedy-Ryan Jackson converted from the charity stripe to make the score 12-9 with 39 seconds remaining
  • A pair of free throws from Briana Stuckey inside the final minute brought Maryville's lead to 14-11 entering the second quarter

Second Quarter

  • Back-to-back Kinstin Davis layups handed Huntingdon their first lead of the quarter at the 8:46 mark 17-16
  • After falling behind 20-19, a 5-2 Hawks run sparked by a three pointer from Kennedy-Ryan Jackson put the Hawks back in front 24-22 with five and-a-half minutes to go 
  • Even at 28 with two minutes remaining in the half, Deshauna Foote's lone free throw served as the final point of the half, giving Huntingdon a 29-28 lead at the break

Third Quarter

  • Davis and Foote followed two Scot free throws with consecutive three pointers to extend Huntingdon's lead, with Destiny Grider's free throw capping off the run and putting the Hawks ahead 38-30 by the 3:32 mark
  • Maryville answered with a 5-0 run of their own to cut Huntingdon's lead to 38-35 entering the final two minutes of the quarter
  • Kinstin Davis knocked down another triple to momentarily stop the bleeding, but Maryville managed to even things at 41 entering the final quarter of play

Fourth Quarter

  • The Scots hit a shot from deep on their first possession of the quarter to take a 44-41 lead
  • Briana McGruder cashed in on a layup soon after to bring the score to 44-43 by the 7:55 mark, but a 6-0 Maryville run extended their lead to 50-43 by the 4:19 mark
  • Back-to-back baskets from Briana Stuckey and Makayla Ford cut into the deficit and brought the score to 52-47 by the 3:15 mark, but Maryville would outscore Huntingdon 4-1 in the final stages to walk away with a 56-48 win

  • Kinstin Davis led the way for Huntingdon as their only double-digit scorer, recording 18 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, and 1 block
  • The Hawks were outrebounded 35-33
  • The Scots found 34 of their points inside the painted area compared to the Hawks 18
