The Hawks Fall Short At Asbury
WILMORE, Ky.- Looking to bounce back from their loss to Maryville yesterday, Huntingdon women's basketball traveled to Wilmore, Kentucky for a battle with Asbury University.
In a game dictated by runs from each side, slow starts in the second and fourth quarters proved to be detrimental to the Hawks, allowing for the Eagles, who currently sit on top of the CCS standings, to run away with a 66-52 victory.
First Quarter
- Kinstin Davis opened the game with a three-pointer on Huntingdon's first possession to give the Hawks an early advantage, but the Eagles responded with a massive run to steal the momentum, putting Asbury ahead 12-3 with 6 minutes remaining in the quarter
- The Eagles followed a pair of Makayla Ford free throws with another run, pushing their advantage to 17-5 by the 3 minute mark
- Six consecutive points from Davis closed the gap, putting Huntingdon behind 19-11 as the second quarter got underway.
Second Quarter
- Charity Shaw scored on a layup 8:52 mark to bring the score to 19-13, but a four-point Asbury swing extended the Eagles lead back to double digits- 23-13 by the 7 minute mark
- Cassidy Campbell and Makayla Ford each scored to cut the deficit to 25-18 nearing the 4 minute mark, but an 8-2 Asbury run to close the quarter brought Huntingdon's halftime deficit to 13, 33-20
Third Quarter
- The Eagles continued to pour it on as the second half got underway, with a 5-2 run bringing their lead to 38-22 two minutes into the period
- Huntingdon responded with a 7-0 run across the next three minutes, seeing contributions from Ford, Briana McGruder, and Briana Stuckey to cut the deficit to 38-29 with five minutes remaining in the quarter
- Deshauna Foote followed back-to-back three-pointers from Ford with a pair of successful tries at the charity stripe, putting the Hawks within striking distince, 42-39, with 1 minute remaining until the fourth quarter
- Trading free throws to close the period, Carltajah Jackson sank two to bring the score to 45-41 heading into the fourth quarter
Fourth Quarter
- Asbury went on a 9 point tear to kick off the fourth quarter, growing their lead to 53-41 by the 8:21 mark
- Makayla Ford kept her hot hand, sinking another shot from deep at the 7:38 mark to stop the bleeding. Nonetheless, the Hawks still trailed 61-44 with 5:40 to go
- A 5-2 Huntingdon run in the closing stages brought the score nearer, but Asbury continued to score in critical moments, hanging on for a 66-52 victory
