Alabama Power Huntingdon Student Athlete Of The Week: Abby Byrd
MONTGOMERY, Ala.- After a string of heroic moments in Huntingdon Women's Basketball's pair of conference victories at home against Belhaven and Piedmont, Abby Byrd has been named the Alabama Power Huntingdon Student Athlete of the Week.
Native to Springville, Alabama, and a graduate of Springville High School, Byrd has come off the bench in all 20 of her games played this season with an average of 9 minutes a night. This past week, she certainly made the most of her opportunities on the court. In Huntingdon's dramatic 79-78 overtime win over Belhaven, Byrd checked into the game with 2:20 remaining. With the score even at 78 inside the final 5 seconds, the Blazers found their way to the charity stripe with a chance to win the game. Not only did they miss both of the free throws, they fould Byrd on the rebound, sending the forward to the line with 1 second remaining. In heroic fashion, Byrd made the first of her tries, putting Huntingdon ahead before missing the second, which prevented the Blazers from getting a last second attempt off.
Abby doubled down on her clutch performance in the Hawks 64-61 win against Piedmont on Senior Day. Once again checking into the game late, Byrd was tasked with guarding the Lion's leading scorer on their final possession with Huntingdon ahead 62-61. As Piedmont got the ball in bounds on the baseline, Abby drew a charge on the Piedmont drive, turning possession back to the Hawks, where Deshauna Foote hit the game-sealing free throws.
Byrd and the Hawks hit the road this Friday, February 13th, to face off with Maryville College in a matchup with major implications on the conference standings heading into tournament play. Tip-off is set for 11:00 AM CT.
