COLUMBUS,Miss.- In their opening match of the season, Huntingdon women's soccer(1-0 overall) defeated the Owls of the Mississippi University for Women(0-1 overall), 3-0 on the road.
How it happened
Throughout the first half, each of the squads played exceptionally well on the defensive side of the ball, with Huntingdon's Libby Williams saving the only shot attempt on goal for the Owls, while MUW was able to prevent scores on five on the Hawk's shots. As a result, the two teams went into halftime tied at 0.
Coming out of halftime, the Hawks found their groove offensively, with Laney Bishop scoring Huntingdon's first goal of the season on a penalty kick at the 53:53 mark.
Freshman Shaylinn McFarland followed Bishop with a goal of her own at the 78:11 mark, beating the MUW keeper off an assist from Angelina Mazza.
To close out the scoring for the day and secure Huntingdon's victory, Anaely Almeida put a shot through the net off a pass from Joy Bartholomew inside of the final three minutes to give the Hawk's a 3-0 win over the Owls.
Keeper Caroline Masker locked down the goal in the second half, saving all three of the Owl's shots on goal to keep the Hawks in front.
