Women's Soccer Drops Season-Opener To Millsaps
MONTGOMERY, Ala.- After their originally scheduled season-opening match was cancelled, Huntingdon Women's Soccer finally was able to take the field in the 2025 season, kicking things off at home against the Majors of Millsaps College in a non-conference showdown. The Hawks fell behind 2-0 in the first half, and couldn't recover, suffering a 3-1 loss.
Prior to the start of tonight's game, Huntingdon College honored the life of Emma Howard, a former Hawk women's soccer student-athlete who passed away last Spring, with a moment of silence. The program made the following statement before initiating the moment of silence:
"Emma was kept off the field last fall by an injury, but through her determination and passion for the game, she was still able to push everyone around her to be better each day. Once she was fully able to return to play, Emma's competitive spirit and creativity with the ball at her feet allowed her to shine on the field. A tremendous athlete, and an even more special person, Emma's impact was felt by all of those around her, both on and off the field. Her laughter, kindness, and friendship are missed by everyone who was blessed to know her."
How it happened
In spite of a rather aggressive start for both teams, featuring five Huntingdon shots in the first 8 minutes, neither team could break the ice through the opening 30 minutes. Millsaps ultimately drew first blood with a goal at the 35:14 mark before tacking on another goal at the 38:42 mark to take a two goal lead into halftime.
The Majors put another shot through the net early in the second half to extend their lead to 3-0 coming down the stretch. Hawks Freshman Avery Chadwick cashed in at the 61:40 mark to cut the deficit to 3-1, but Huntingdon couldn't complete the second half comeback, falling 3-1.
In the goal
Junior goalkeeper Libby Williams played all 90 minutes in the goal for the Hawks, picking up 9 saves on 12 shots on goal.
The Hawks look to bounce back on Saturday, September 6th, as they travel to Shreveport, Louisiana to face Wiley in a neutral site match hosted by Centenary College. Gametime is set for 12:00 PM CT.
