Hawks Sweep Agnes Scott Before Falling To Covenant

DECATUR, Ga.- Coming off a loss on the road at LaGrange, Huntingdon Volleyball continued their series of road conference matches, traveling to face off with Agnes Scott and Covenant in a tri-match hosted in Decatur, Georgia. The Hawks opened the day with a dominant 3-0 victory over ASC before taking a 3-0 loss of their own at the hands of the Covenant Scots.

Match One v. Agnes Scott

The Hawks set the tone early, claiming the first set by a score of 25-9. Huntingdon saw their best hitting percentage of the entire season for a single set to get this match underway, recording 16 kills and 3 errors on 27 total attempts to spearhead their offensive effort. Led by Kinsley Martin, the Hawks got things going with a 9-0 run. Throughout the duration of the set, the closest the Scotties drew within was 13 points(17-4 and 18-5). Lindsey Holland and Morgan Suggs picked up consecutive kills to close things out and move Huntingdon in front 1-0. 

Capturing their momentum generated in the opening set, the Hawks followed up with a 25-12 victory in each of the following two sets. In the second set, Huntingdon jumped out to a 7-2 lead to get things going. The Scotties answered with a run to cut the lead to 12-7, but the Hawks remained consistent at the net, extending their lead to 21-10 after 4 consecutive kills from Jessie Eunice and Cheyenne Ashworth. Eunice and Ashworth were joined by Taylor Stewart and Alyssa Dendy to close things out, pushing the lead to 2-0. 

Contrary to the start of the first two sets, the Hawks and Scotties traded blows as the third set got underway, as Agnes Scott held a slight 7-6 lead early on. Not to be outdone however, Huntingdon rallied behind the efforts of A'Kirra McElveen and Cheyenne Ashworth to take a 18-10 lead before scoring six consecutive points to close things out.

Match Two v. Covenant

Projected to repeat as the CCS Champions, Covenant flew out of the gates early en route to a 25-18 first set victory. The Hawks battled at the net with 11 kills, but their 10 errors boosted the Scots in their efforts. Huntingdon held a 2-1 lead after the first three serves, but once in front, Covenant never relinquished their lead, taking a 1-0 advantage. 

The Hawks battled to get the second set going, seeing kills from Lily VanDyke, Kinsley Martin, and Lindsey Holland as they found themselves ina  9-9 tie. The Scots rallied shortly after however, using a 4-0 run to seperate themselves with a 13-9 lead. The Hawks tried to respond with a late run of their own, drawing within one, 22-21, following a Morgan Suggs ace, but Covenant scored 3 unanswered points to take the 2-0 lead. 

The Scots put together their best set of the match in the third to close things out early. Huntingdon battled early to be within two, 6-4, but Covenant caught fire with a 10-0 run to take control of things 16-6 en route to the 25-12 set victory.

The Hawks return to action in Roland Arena Friday, October 3rd as they kick-off homecoming weekend by hosting Mary-Hardin Baylor. Matches are set for 12:30 and 2:30 PM CT.
