Jonathan Zafra Named Assistant Women's Wrestling Coach
MONTGOMERY,Ala.- Huntingdon Athletics and head women's wrestling coach Lillian Humphries have announced the hiring of Jonathan Zafra as assistant coach for women's wrestling.
Hailing from Asheville, North Carolina, Zafra wrestled for and graduated from Montreat College with a bachelor's degree in Educational Studies in May of 2023. As a student-athlete, Zafra was able to gain immense experience coaching wrestling, volunteering with the OBX Factory Wrestling Club and Manteo High School.
In addition to volunteer coaching, Jonathan was employed by the Buncombe County school system in North Carolina, initially as a substitute teacher, but most recently as an Assistant Teacher. In these roles, Zafra was able to maintain and develop positive working environments and relationships with students.
\Wrestling for over 10 years, Zafra brings a wealth of knowledge of the sport to the Huntingdon staff. As a senior at Manteo High School, Jonathan became the champion of his region before finishing as a state finalist in North Carolina. Asides from his experience wrestling at the high school and collegiate level, Zafra, as a Dual Citizen athlete, was able to train with the Peruvian National Team.
"We are very excited to add Jonathan to our coaching staff," head women's wrestling coach Lillian Humphries shared. " Having international experience training with the Peruvian National Team has provided Jonathan with the additional tools to be a great asset for this program. We are happy to have a full coaching staff this season along with a full roster."
