Goal Line Stand Pushes Hawks Past Brevard

BREVARD, NC.- In their second consecutive road contest, Huntingdon Football squared off with the Brevard Tornadoes- moving to a 4-4 overall and 3-2 in USA South play following a last second goal line stand that secured the Hawks 32-26 victory. 

After being forced to punt on the first possession of the game, Huntingdon surrendered the first points of the game at the 5:46 mark in the first quarter following a 25-yard field goal for the Tornadoes. Brevard's lead grew on their ensuing offensive possession following a Hawks turnover-on-downs with a 35-yard touchdown pass, bringing the score to 10-0 by the by the end of the first quarter. 

As the second quarter, the Hawks saw their first solid offensive possession come to an abrupt finish- as Jake White's pass was intercepted at the 11:16 mark in the quarter. The two teams went on to trade punts on their ensuing possessions before the Hawks finally broke through with 4:51 remaining until halftime- as White connected with Tim McReynolds from 4 yards out to cut the lead to 10-7. Kicker Andrew Ginsburg matched a Brevard field goal on the following possession with one of his own just before halftime from 33 yards out that cut the halftime deficit to 13-10. 

As the second half got underway, the Tornadoes controlled all aspects of the game, scoring 13 unanswered points in the quarter to extend their lead to 26-10 entering the final 15 minutes. Not to be outdone however, the Hawks embarked on a 22 point scoring tear in the quarter, sparked by Connor Cash's 8-yard touchdown at the 11:24 mark that Landon Pace followed up on with a two-point conversion reception that drew the Hawks within 8, 26-18. Still hot, Cash picked up yet another receiving touchdown, this time from  26-yards out off a pass from Jake White to bring Huntingdon within 2, before Pace converted yet again on a two-point play that evened the score at 26 with 6:11 to go. 

After the Hawks defense forced another Brevard punt, Jake White led the Hawks offense on a 7-play, 77 yard drive capped off by a 26-yard touchdown pass to Terrell Copeland with 1:16 remaining that put Huntingdon in front 32-26 coming down the stretch. With one last chance to score, Brevard put together a promising drive, getting the ball to Huntingdon's 1-yard line with 50 seconds to go. When it mattered most, the Hawks defense answered the call, stringing together 4 consecutive stops in the goal line to walk way with the crucial conference victory on the road.

The Hawks return to Samford Stadium on November 8th, as they play host to Southern Virginia for Senior Day. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM CT.
