Last Second Three Downs The Hawks

MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Coming off a 15 point victory over Asbury University, Huntingdon men's basketball returned to action in Roland Arena, squaring off with Maryville. With each of the two teams sitting atop the CCS standings thus far this season, the two teams traded leads 24 times as they battled. A Scots three pointer with five seconds proved to be the difference, handing Huntingdon their first CCS loss of the season at home, 80-77.

First Half

  • The Scots came out of the gates swinging, opening the game with a 12-2 run through the opening three minutes to claim an early double-digit lead
  • Randall Davis' layup at the 16:08 mark sparked a 10-0 run over the following three minutes. Seeing baskets from Myles Murphy, Martise Jackson, and Jeremy Autin, the Hawks led 14-12 with 13 minutes remaining in the half
  • Maryville reclaimed the lead 17-16 at the 11:16 mark, but RayQuan Taylor scored on the following possession to flip the lead back to Huntingdon, 18-17
  • Trailing 25-21 with 8:42 to go, Nate Johns and BJ Brown combined to give Huntingdon a 26-25 lead just a minute later
  • After trading baskets and stops for the next five minutes, the Hawks trailed 35-32 with three minutes remaining until halftime. The teams continued to trade blows as the half drew near, but BJ Brown's one-legged three pointer at the buzzer gave Huntingdon a 41-39 lead at the halftime break

Second Half

  • The Hawks started the second half hot, going on a 9-3 run through the first three minutes. Tate Goolesby's layup put a stamp on the run and gave the Hawks a 50-42 advantage
  • BJ Brown's layup at the 16 minute mark handed Huntingdon their first double-digit lead of the contest, 54-44
  • The Scots answered with an 11-2 run to cut the Hawks lead to 56-55 by the 11:08 mark
  • Brown sank a shot from deep just twenty seconds later to momentarily stop the bleeding, but Maryville still managed to reclaim the lead, 60-59 with 9:55 remaining
  • Trading baskets back-and-forth while simultaneously trading leads, Maryville extended their lead to as much as five, 77-72, by the 2:30 mark
  • RayQuan Taylor's and-one put-back layup with 1:36 to go cut Maryville's lead to two, 77-75.
  • With less than a minute remaining, the Hawks were forced to foul. At the 24 second mark, the Scots missed the front-end of a one-and-one free throw attempt, allowing Martise Jackson to finish a layup and tie things at 77 with 16 seconds to go.
  • On the Scots final possession, they found an open look off a drive-and-kick, hitting the triple with 6 seconds left to take a 80-77 victory

  • Despite the numerous ties and lead changes, each team held a double-digit lead at one point in the game
  • The Hawks outrebounded the Scots 39-34
  • The Scots scored 18 points off of turnovers, while Huntingdon had just 7
  • Huntingdon's bench outscored Maryville's 21-8
