Hawks Draw With LaGrange At Home
MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Locked in a battle with the Panthers for the sixth place position in the Collegiate Conference of the South standings with the Panthers, Huntingdon Women's Soccer welcomed LaGrange College to the Samford Soccer Complex this evening, walking away from the match in a 1-1 draw. LaGrange, now 4-8-3 on the season overall and 2-3-2 in conference play, currently holds the sixth place position, with Huntingdon, now 2-9-2 on the season with a CCS record of 1-4-1, one spot back, fighting for a spot in the conference championship tournament come November.
How it happened
With postseason implications coming of the result of this contest, energy and emotion was high from the onset. Through the first 30 minutes of the match, only six shots were taken(4 for the Panthers, 2 for the Hawks), as each side's defense refused to allow any clear attempts on the goal. This trend carried through the conclusion of the first half, as the LaGrange fired off 5 more attempts to 2 for the Hawks, none of which found the mark as the teams entered the break deadlocked at 0.
Things ramped up in the second half in terms of intensity for both squads, as five total yellow cards were handed out in the final 45 minutes between the two teams, but still neither team could gain the advantage offensively. The Panthers managed to break things open at the 83 minute mark, finally getting around Madelon Machen to grab the lead nearing the 90 minute mark. With their backs against the wall and postseason opportunities on the line, the Hawks answered the call offensively just 11 seconds later, as freshman Greer Kemmett connected with Shaylinn McFarland down the field, bringing the score to 1-1 and closing the game out in a last-second draw.
In the goal
#31 Madelon Machen moved to 1-6-1 on the season, surrendering the one goal while recording 6 saves in 90 minutes of action.
With tonight's draw, the Hawks remain in contention with two matches remaining in the regular season, the first of which is set for Saturday, October 18th at Agnes Scott. Gametime is set for 1:00 PM CT.
