Hawks Volleyball Sweeps Belhaven

MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Bring their five-game home stretch to a close, Huntingdon Volleyball improved to 12-9 on the season and 4-2 in CCS play, sweeping the Belhaven Blazers 3-0 in a crucial conference match.

Setting the tone early, the Hawks pieced together an excellent opening set to take a 1-0 advantage by a score of 25-18. Boosted by a match-high .194 hitting percentage, Huntingdon fell behind early 4-2, but rallied to even things at 7 before consecutive kills from Aly Harris gave the Hawks a 12-9 advantage. From this point, Huntingdon led through the duration of the set, fending off Blazer runs that saw the lead reduce to as little as 20-17 coming down the stretch. The Hawks remained solid however, making the most of six Belhaven errors en route to the set victory.

The second set saw more of the same, as Huntingdon grabbed control of the match with a 2-0 set lead, 25-21. The Blazers came out swinging, securing a match-high 13 kills in the set, but simultaneously recorded a high of 8 errors, which proved to be their shortcoming. Belhaven led for a larger portion of this set, maintaining a 16-15 lead nearing crunch time, but Huntingdon caught fire late, as Lily VanDyke and Morgan Suggs led the Hawks offensive attack that grabbed a 19-17 lead before outscoring the Blazers 6-4 en route to their 2-0 lead.

To close things out and complete the conference sweep at home, the Hawks secured a 25-17 third set victory. Huntingdon found themselves trailing midway through the set 10-9, but led by Kinsley Martin, stormed back to take a 16-10 lead, maintaining their advantage to bring the match to a close in three sets. Picking up a match high 10 kills in the set, the Hawks upped their intensity offensively late, resulting in the 3-0 conference victory.
