Carey Claims Win #100 As Hawks Knock Off Hendrix
MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Ending their six-game losing streak to the Warriors this afternoon, Huntingdon Men's Lacrosse used a hot shooting second half to knock off Hendrix College 11-6 as they prepare for USA South play next week. With the win today, Hawks Head Coach Andrew Carey has claimed 100 victories as head coach of the program.
Coach Andrew Carey arrived in Montgomery, Alabama from his alma mater, Greensboro College, in 2011 to begin building Huntingdon College's men's lacrosse program; a program which is now in its 15th season. During that time, Coach Carey has led a program which has seen all-conference players, players of the year, conference titles and an NCAA tournament appearance.
Kelcey Marston opened the scoring just 50 seconds into the contest, finishing unassisted to give the Hawks an early edge. After Hendrix answered with a pair of goals to take a 2-1 lead, Huntingdon weathered the early push and settled in defensively.
Trailing 3-1 in the second quarter, the Hawks began to shift momentum. Jaxon McMonigle found the back of the net off an assist from Marston, and Tristan Dial added an unassisted goal later in the frame to knot the game at 3-3 heading into halftime.
Huntingdon seized control in the third quarter with its most explosive stretch of the afternoon. Marston sparked the run with his second goal of the day, and after Hendrix briefly tied the score at 4-4, the Hawks rattled off six of the next seven goals. McMonigle scored twice during the surge, Marston completed his hat trick, and Josh Knost tallied back-to-back goals. Connor Angst added a man-up score late in the quarter as Huntingdon built a commanding 10-5 advantage. Nico Palmieri capped the scoring in the final minute, finishing unassisted to seal the 11-6 win.
Marston and McMonigle led the offense with three goals apiece, while Knost added two. Angst contributed a goal and an assist, and Dial chipped in a goal as well. Huntingdon peppered the net with 57 shots, placing 31 on frame.
At the faceoff X, Mason Honeycutt dominated possession, winning 14 of 19 draws as the Hawks controlled 15 of 20 overall. Huntingdon also held a decisive 48-28 edge in ground balls, highlighted by Dial's nine and Honeycutt's seven. Defensively, the Hawks forced 25 turnovers and limited Hendrix to just one man-up goal in four opportunities.
In goal, Ethan Schellenberger earned the win with 11 saves across 60 minutes, anchoring a strong defensive effort that allowed just two second-half goals.
The Hawks open conference play on March 7th as they travel to face Pfeifer. Gametime is set for 1:00 PM CT.
