Women's Basketball Falls At Asbury

WILMORE, Ky.- Traveling to Kentucky for a matchup with the projected CCS runner-up Asbury University, Huntingdon Women's Basketball couldn't find their footing, dropping the conference contest 79-52.

Throughout the contest, the Hawks were cold from three, missing on all 11 of their attempts in the loss. On the season, they average nearly five made triples per game.

First Quarter

Asbury hit their stride early on, hitting on four of their first five shots to take an 8-4 lead early. Back-to-back baskets off the bench from Ashanti Thomas allowed for Huntingdon to dice into the lead and cut the score to 13-8 by the 2:32 mark, but the Eagles outscored the Hawks 4-2 coming down the stretch in the quarter to take a 17-10 lead into the second.

Second Quarter

Building off of their momentum generated in the first, Asbury kicked off the second quarter with a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 24-10 by the eight minute mark. Led by a duo of Charity Shaw and Kennedi McCray, the Hawks bounced back with a 6-0 swing of their own in the following two minutes, reducing the lead to 24-16 approaching the final six minutes of the half. Asbury continued to find success however, following up with a run to push their lead to 33-19 by the 3:38 mark. Baskets from Deshauna Foote and Charity inside the final two minutes allowed for Huntingdon to keep stride, but the Hawks still faced a 37-26 deficit at the break.

Third Quarter

Coming out of the break, the Eagles kept their hot shooting hand, hitting consecutive threes to boost an opening 8-2 run that brought their advantage to 45-28 by the 8:29 mark. Deshauna Foote and Kiya Crayton followed with jumpers to stop the run and cut into the deficit, but Asbury's lead ultimately grew to 20, 52-32, with 3:48 remaining in the quarter. A 6-0 Huntingdon run featuring baskets from Ashanti Thomas and Dalyce Sanders momentarily stopped the bleeding, but Asbury held onto a 55-38 lead with one quarter to go.

Fourth Quarter

Asbury saved their best quarter for last, as the Eagles outscored Huntingdon 24-14 to walk away with the 79-52 victory. Ashanti Thomas and Deshauna Foote continued to shoulder the load offensively, scoring 11 of the Hawks 14 in the final 10 minutes, but the Eagles blistering shooting proved to be too much to overcome late.

The Hawks will look to answer on Saturday, January 24th, as they travel to face off with Maryville. Tip-off is set for 1:00 PM CT.
