Huntingdon wraps up first day of USTA/ITA South Regional Championships

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon women's tennis team picked up three singles wins and four doubles victories on the opening day of the USTA/ITA South Regional Championships on Friday.

Entering the second day of the three-day tournament at Lagoon Park, three Huntingdon singles players are left in the main draw consolation brackets and three doubles teams are still in contention in their respective brackets.

Play resumes on Saturday with singles at 8 a.m. Doubles play is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

In the main draw singles, Huntingdon senior Katie Scott and sophomore Taylor Clark each won their first-round matches before falling in the second round. Sophomore Hannah Still and freshmen Britni Thibodeau and Rory Wilson lost their first-round matches but are still alive in the second round of the consolation bracket.

All three play at 8 a.m. Saturday as Still takes on Millsaps' Callie Creekmore, Thibodeau plays Rhodes' Courtney Hornsby and Wilson faces Covenant's Madi Hyatt.

In the main draw doubles, the team of Scott-Clark won in the first round but fell to the top-seeded team of Bronte Goodhue-Jenny Liles (University of the South) in Round 2. The team of Still-Thibodeau lost its first match but will play in the consolation quarterfinals on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Birmingham-Southern's Sara Cohen-Lindsey Farrell.

In the B-draw singles, sophomore Micaela White won her opening match before losing in the second round. Huntingdon's team of White-Arielle Barraca had a strong showing in the B-draw doubles.

The duo won both matches on Friday to advance to the semifinals. White-Barraca will play the University of the South's Kate Johnston-Meredith Lawrence in the semifinals at 2 p.m.

Also in the B-draw, Huntingdon's team of Farrah Mahan-Wilson lost in the first round before picking up a win in the consolation quarterfinals. Mahan-Wilson play in the consolation semifinals on Saturday at 2 p.m.
