Hawks Stifled At Oglethorpe

ATLANTA, Ga.-  Following up on their heart-breaking loss at home a week ago to Berry, Huntingdon Women's Basketball continued their SAA-crusade, this time hitting the road to face off with the Stormy Petrels of Oglethorpe University. The Hawks, shooting just 29% from the field to go with 23 turnovers, couldn't hit their stride offensively, resulting in a 85-48 loss.

First Quarter

Coming out of the gates, the two teams traded blows offensively  en route to an even 10-10 score through the first four minutes of action. Huntingdon was led through this stretch by Ashanti Thomas, who came off the bench following Charity Shaw's two quick files to provide a spark. Coming out of a timeout at the 4:51 mark however, the tides turned in favor of the Stormy Petrels, as Oglethorpe pieced together a 9-0 run over the course of the next two minutes to grab control of the contest, 19-10. Jillian Baine knocked down a triple off an assist from KJ Jones at the 2:05 mark that momentarily stopped the bleeding, but the Stormy Petrels responded with one of their own to bring their lead to 22-13 at the end of the first quarter.

Second Quarter

The second quarter proved to be all Oglethorpe- as the Hawks were outpaced 27-15 through the 10 minutes leading into the halftime break. The Stormy Petrels caught fire early and kept their hot hand, shooting 53% from the field and 42% from beyond the arc for the quarter, holding Huntingdon to just 35% and 20%, respectively. Following baskets from Thomas, Kiya Crayton, and Makayla Ford, the Hawks drew within 6, 25-19, by the 8 minute mark, but Oglethorpe's 16-2 run in response pushed the gap to 39-21. Dalyce Sanders stopped the bleeding with a short jumper, but nonetheless Huntingdon entered the halftime break trailing 49-28.

Third Quarter

As the third quarter got started, the Stormy Petrels never lost their stride, outscoring Huntingdon  21-12 for the quarter to bring their lead to 70-40. Forcing 7 turnovers, the Hawks defense showed instances of dictating the pace of the game, but Oglethorpe's 66% shooting from the field and 100% from the three point line proved to be the differenc, as Huntingdon missed all five of their three point attempts and shot 30% from the field for the 10 minutes.

Fourth Quarter

Coming down the stretch of this afternoon's contest, Huntingdon's offensive struggles continued, shooting a game-low 15.8% from the field as they were outscored 15-8 to close things out. Defensively however, this proved to be the Hawks best showing for the game, as Deshauna Foote, Charity Shaw, Jayla Carter, and Abby Byrd each recorded steals to highlight an effort that held Oglethorpe to just 25% shooting from the field.

The Hawks will look to bounce back on Saturday, November 22nd at home as they host Sewanee. Tip-off is set for 1:00 PM CT.
