Shaw Posts Double-Double As Huntingdon Takes Down Maryville At Home

MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Continuing their conference stretch in their return to action following the holiday season, Huntingdon Women's Basketball controlled both ends of the floor as they overcame a slight deficit early on, leading through the duration of the second, third, and fourth quarters to take down the Maryville College Scots at home. Hawks starting center Charity Shaw lit it up on both ends for Huntingdon, posting her second double-double of the season with a 17 point, 11 rebound outing that guided the Hawks to their 2-0 start in conference play with a 66-56 win this afternoon.

First Quarter

It was the Scots who found their rhythm early, as Maryville strided out to a 10-4 lead three minutes in. The Hawks, led by a trio of Charity Shaw, Deshauna Foote, and Kennedi McCray, responded in a big way however, opening up a 8-0 run across the following three minutes to even things at 10. Baskets from Ashanti Thomas and Dalyce Sanders nearing the end of the quarter allowed for Huntingdon to take a 15-12 lead into the second period.

Second Quarter

Things began to break open in the second quarter, as the Hawks held Maryville to just nine points in the second quarter to widen the gap further. The Scots converted on consecutive layups in the first three minutes to draw within one, 19-18, with 5:56 remaining before the break, but a 5-0 Huntingdon run that saw baskets from Kiya Crayton, Jillian Baine, and Makayla Ford quickly extended the Hawks lead to 24-18 by the 3:17 mark. Maryville followed with an and-one finish on the ensuing possession to reduce the deficit to three, but Charity Shaw's layup with 1:38 to go kept Huntingdon ahead at the break 26-21.

Third Quarter

Keeping with the theme of Huntingdon controlling the pace of the game on both ends, the Hawks outpaced the Scots to the tune of 19-12 in the third quarter to push their lead to 45-33 headed into the final quarter of play. Huntingdon's offensive success was largely in part due to Makayla Ford's hot shooting from the field, as the Hawks guard scored 11 of her 20 points of the night in the third quarter to fuel the exemplary third quarter. On the other side of the court, Maryville was held to just 35% shooting from the field and 20% from three while turning the ball over four times as Huntingdon solidified their control with 10 minutes remaining.

Fourth Quarter

Maryville's best quarter of the contest came in the fourth, as they outscored Huntingdon 23-21 down the stretch, but it proved to be too late. Led by Charity Shaw's 11 points in the quarter, the Hawks never allowed for their lead to fall to less than six, as timely baskets and effective free throw shooting from Shaw, Makayla Ford, Kennedi McCray, and Deshauna Foote allowed for the Hawks to ice away their 66-56 victory over their conference rival.
