Hawks Complete Season Sweep Of Wesleyan

MACON, Ga.- Taking to the court for the first time in 10 days, Huntingdon Women's Basketball ended a stretch of three consecutive conference losses with an emphatic 61-43 victory at Wesleyan. With tonight's win, the Hawks complete their season sweep of the Wolves, winning each contest by at least 18 points.

First Quarter

The tone for tonight's contest was set early on, as Huntingdon outscored Wesleyan 20-11 through the first 10 minutes to establish control. Senior guard Makayla Ford began to hit her stride offensively again, scoring eight of the Hawks opening twelve points to lead the way. Wesleyan kept stride however, tacking on baskets of their own to stay within 5, 14-9, nearing the 3 minute mark. Huntingdon closed out the quarter strong however, as a pair of shots from Abby Byrd near the rim followed by a tip-in from Dalyce Sanders capped off a 6-2 run in favor of the Hawks. Seniors Charity Shaw and Deshauna Foote each played a large role in Huntingdon's offensive success, capitalizing on attempts early to widen the gap.

Second Quarter

The Wolves responded in the second quarter, scoring 11 points to Huntingdon's 13 to remain in contention. Nonetheless, the Hawks still entered the halftime break holding on to a 33-22 advantage. It was Erica Rodriguez who got the scoring going early, as her jumper at the 9:40 mark extended the Hawks lead to double-digits for the first time, bringing the score to 22-11. Her basket made way for a nearly 5 minute long scoring hiatus for both sides before Kiya Crayton finally broke the ice with 5:29 to go in the half and extended the lead to 24-11. Wesleyan followed the cold stretch with a 6-2 run, drawing back within single digits at the 2:22 mark with a pair of free throws, making the score 26-17. Charity Shaw came to life in the final two minutes of the half however, scoring six of Huntingdon's next 8 points to resore the double-digit lead entering the break.

Third Quarter

As the second half got underway, both sides traded baskets and stops through the early parts of the third quarter to bring the score to 36-26 by the 7 minute mark following a layup from Deshauna Foote. The back-and-forth affair continued through the majority of the quarter, but Makayla Ford's triple just inside the four minute mark sparked a 12-2 Huntingdon run, seeing baskets from Ashanti Thomas, Jayla Carter, and Foote as the Hawks boasted a 50-32 lead heading into the final quarter of play.

Fourth Quarter

Neither side could break things open in the final 10 minutes, as the two squads played to an even 11 points in the quarter- handing Huntingdon a 61-43 CCS victory on the road. Sophomore guard Taff Bradley caught fire in the quarter, scoring six of the team's 11 points with consecutive three pointers on back-to-back possessions to help secure the Hawks win. Ericka Hall's layup at the 1:59 mark iced things away, putting Huntingdon up 61-41 before the Wolves hit two free throws late to close things out.
